The EthnoNotes Story

The development of EthnoNotes was inspired by the real-world challenge of doing integrated qualitative and quantitative research with teams working across the country.  Drs. Weisner and Lieber, the professional researchers responsible for the conception and development of EthnoNotes, have participated in many team research projects blending text and numbers.  These projects often involved having teams with members in widespread locations carrying out fieldwork in homes and communities.  Team members frequently used different computer platforms and different software to accomplish their tasks.  Such projects could clearly benefit from real-time access to shared project data, but there was no easy solution to meet this goal. Researchers who take on these methodological challenges face two key problems.

  1. How do you manage and share the rich set of data being compiled in an efficient, reliable and safe manner?
  2. How do you integrate survey, assessment, ethnographic, and interview data in one easy-to-use database?
EthnoNotes was our solution.  Initially, EthnoNotes relied on a commercial database platform.  Now, EthnoNotes is fully accessible on the Internet through any standard browser on any platform and takes full advantage of the latest technologies to greatly enhance its speed, power, and functionality.

EthnoNotes Catches On!
To date, investigators across the U.S. and on three continents have relied on the earlier versions of EthnoNotes for a range of projects, including:
  • HIV/STD prevention in China and children’s management of pain in Italy
  • Emergent literacy development in working poor Latino & African-American families
  • Asian immigrant family adaptation
  • The adaptation of families to children with mental retardation and developmental delay
  • Mental health services provided by the public school system
  • School, community, and medical support seeking by families with children with epilepsy
  • Asian-American adolescents' perception of parental control
  • Working poor families responses to work supports and effects on children
  • Immigrant families with children in middle school and their socio-cultural adaptation
And there are many more. Yet we still weren't satisfied with earlier versions bound by the limitations of existing database platforms and requiring the purchase of expensive software for different computers. We wanted a system that was even more accessible and easy to use on any computer at any time or place, with more power, more speed, and more features.

EthnoNotes Grows!
We took our wish list to a team of talented and creative programmers and began building a tool that would serve all the purposes of the current version of EthnoNotes and then add still more features.  The result?   EthnoNotes via the Web!  We’re delighted with what this new service is bringing to our own work, and we know you will be too.  EthnoNotes is now even easier, safer, more powerful, more-cost effective, and more enjoyable to use.
